The Impact of One Teacher

Eight years ago when I began teaching at Hopewell High School, I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Donna Hatfield. She was our department chair and an excellent educator. This summer at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, Texas, I met Mr. Brian Thomas, a Hopewell High School graduate and current Business & IT teacher. Mr. Thomas told me his story. He explained how Mrs. Hatfield's encouragement is why he is a Business teacher today. The impact of one teacher...

As we begin this school year, I salute Mrs. Hatfield and all the educators who have impacted countless students and teachers. Thank you for your passion and for your exemplary character. We love and appreciate you!

Tonight is a Good, Good Night!

Well, the moment we have been waiting for is here! It's Showtime: the Awards of Excellence Program at the 2012 FBLA National Leadership Conference here in San Antonio, Texas!

In just a little while, we will know where team HHS FBLA placed! Stay tuned...

March of Dimes Mini-Walk

What a great way to raise funds and awareness about the March of Dimes. For non-profit organizations, FBLA is the leading contributor to the March of Dimes.

Yesterday, here at the NLC, we had a mini-walk. Each person in attendance gave a donation of $5 ($15, if he or she wanted a t-shirt). There was a DJ and teenagers ready to dance, dance, dance!

Sophia and her mother were there. Sophia is the March of Dimes San Antonio feature child for this year. Sophia's mother shared their story. It was a powerful testimony about the life-changing benefit of giving to the March of Dimes.

The Final Round!

I am sitting here in the performance room, Conference Room 1 of the Marriott Rivercenter! Ayanna and Olajuwon will be in here in a minute or so. They were to begin their 20 minute preparation time at 8:10. Business leaders do their thing early in the morning! I'm glad they are first! Whew!

Well actually, they won't be first! Due to a logistical error, they should be somewhere between the second and fourth teams to perform. (What happened? I won't go there! No worries! I was professional :))

I am full to the brim with every amount of motherly, teacherly and "coachly" emotion and pride that anyone could have! I had to get tissues a few moments ago! These students are absolutely amazing! Some do their thing on basketball courts, tennis courts, and football fields. My kids do their thing in front of computers and in conference rooms! They are the Future Business Leaders of America, and as I've heard so many championship coaches say before, I just have the awesome privilege of being their coach!

A Blast from the Immediate Past!

Last week, as we were finalizing plans for San Antonio, there was yet another FBLA Adventure!

Hopewell High School rising junior Tyesha Evans is a leader in FBLA Virginia. She is the VSU Region President, which also makes her the State VP representing the VSU Region and makes me the VSU Regional Advisor.

Last week, with the help of Ms. Dorothy Johnson and my new buddy Marquis, Tyesha and I journeyed to Roanoke College for Virginia FBLA's State Officer Training.

We look forward to a great year for the VSU Region!

Top 15!

They did it! Olajuwon and Ayanna were among the Top15 scorers in the first round of their competitive event, the Marketing Team Competition. This qualifies them for the final round, the performance event where they will be given a marketing scenario to plan and present!

Best wishes to Olajuwon and Ayanna! Way to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia, the City of Hopewell, Hopewell Public Schools, Hopewell High School, Virginia FBLA, and HHS FBLA!!!!

Virginia FBLA State Meeting

Our first official conference meeting was this evening: the Virginia FBLA Meeting.

The students from Hopewell look great and are ready for the first round of competition tomorrow morning!
